Afghanistan SDGs Cost Estimation Workshop
UNDP Afghanistan, in partnership with the Afghanistan Ministries of Finance and Economy, and with technical support from the Millennium Institute, conducted a three-day workshop on cost estimation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Afghanistan. The workshop is the first activity of a project to estimate the financial resources that will be required to achieve the Afghanistan SDGs (A-SDGs) by 2030.
Understanding the size of financing gap and financing options are crucial preconditions, however, successful implementation of the A-SDGs also depend greatly on integrating and streamlining the SDGs in Afghanistan’s mechanism for development policy discussion and priority setting, most importantly the national budget process.
To achieve this goal, MI will work with Afghanistan national stakeholders to contextualize and calibrate the Integrated Sustainable Development Goals model (iSDG) to Afghanistan, and deploy a comprehensive tool to support evidence-based policymaking. As noted by Mr. Abdallah Al Dardari, UNDP Resident Representative for Afghanistan, “The iSDG model will be developed in close coordination with the relevant government institutions; it will be a nationally owned model and will be handed over to the government.”
The iSDG-Afghanistan model will be used to examine the impact of policy interventions on each of the A-SDG targets, identify the complementary priority interventions that will catalyze progress towards meeting the targets, and following this, used to estimate the cost requirements for implementing integrated interventions under a ‘baseline scenario’ and ‘growth+ scenario’ policy options, and how they can be financed.
The project is expected to be concluded by October 2021.
